Life at Cefas, Lowestoft

The origins of Cefas date back to 1902 when a small fisheries laboratory was established in Lowestoft, a major North Sea fishing port at the time. Initially concerned with researching offshore fisheries our sphere of work broadened over the decades to encompass inshore waters and wider marine and aquatic environmental concerns and issues. Today we boast a range of sophisticated chemical and biological instrumentation for environmental research and monitoring.

Scientific research here is varied and includes fisheries science and management, stock assessment and ecosystems effects. The resource management work we carry out includes studying how types of human activity affect the marine environment and the effects of offshore renewable energy resources.

Cefas, Lowestoft (which, having absorbed our Burnham laboratory, will be relocating to our new purpose-built, environmentally friendly, waterfront facilities at the Waveney Campus in Suffolk) is our largest site, and currently employs around 400 people, who are mostly scientific staff. It is home to our corporate services, and therefore also has opportunities for people looking for administrative, financial, electronic, IT or business development roles.
