Careers

Cefas operates a policy of fair and open competition. Our job advertisements are placed in appropriate publications accessible to a wide audience and all applications are considered against the job/person criteria, as detailed within the job description.

Most of our employees are scientists, specialising in a range of biological, environmental and physical sciences. Jobs at Cefas are varied and interesting, and often involve working in multidisciplinary international teams. For some positions, there may be opportunities to go to sea on our research vessel, the RV Cefas Endeavour, or other chartered vessels; and for more senior posts you may be invited to attend international meetings or to visit a range of other countries. There are also exciting non-scientific opportunities within business development, project and contract management, IT and electronics, HR and finance.

In recent years Cefas has expanded its number of employees to nearly around 550, with the majority on permanent contracts. Our staff are drawn from a number of countries and cultural backgrounds so there is a wide age demographic and a good balance of genders through our pay bands.

Cefas has attracted a loyal core of dedicated staff who have remained with the agency for many years. But our ambitions mean that we are constantly on the lookout for new and vibrant ideas to help us to further our understanding and make a real impact on the world around us.
